That makes this page different from Martinez, West County, and Marsh Creek. The person may already be outside a jail cell, but the official status may still be custody, monitoring, or supervision.

For a released-inmates site, this distinction is critical. Many people use the word "released" to mean "not currently in a jail bed." The official record may be more precise: released to electronic monitoring, placed on pretrial release, assigned to work alternative, supervised under county parole, ordered to alcohol monitoring, or discharged from the program entirely. Each status has a different records path. A normal public jail roster may not show the person because the person is not housed in a jail unit, but that absence does not prove the person is free of conditions.

Alternative custody is often tied to a court order, Sheriff program placement, probation or pretrial supervision, or a later discharge. 1. Search the Sheriff In-Custody Locator to see whether the person still appears in county jail custody.
2. If no current custody result appears, check California VINE for custody-status changes if the person was in a participating custody feed.
3. Review Contra Costa Superior Court records for release-to-program language, pretrial conditions, work alternative orders, county parole, monitoring requirements, sentence changes, or discharge orders.
4. Use Sheriff custody contacts or Records & ID when the question is a formal custody or alternative-custody record.
5. Check Contra Costa Probation when the status is probation, PRCS, mandatory supervision, pretrial supervision, or local community supervision.
6. Do not call the person fully discharged unless a court record, Sheriff record, probation source, or supervising program confirms discharge.

About Custody Alternative

Custody alternative programs are designed for cases where the person does not need to occupy a standard jail bed or where the court and custody system authorize a monitored community placement. The Sheriff fact sheet names electronic home detention, work alternative, county parole, alcohol monitoring, and pretrial release. Those categories are not interchangeable. Electronic home detention is not the same as probation. Work alternative is not the same as a dismissed case. County parole is not the same as CDCR state parole. Pretrial release is not the same as post-sentence discharge.

Because the categories differ, the page avoids saying that every person in a custody alternative program is a "released inmate" in the same way. The better phrasing is "out of a jail bed under alternative custody or supervision." Alternative-custody records may be less visible than jail custody records. The public locator may stop showing a person when the person is outside a jail bed. VINE may show a custody change but not the full legal reason or program terms. Court records may identify an order but not every operational detail. Sheriff Records & ID may process records requests, but exemptions, privacy rules, sealed records, and law-enforcement limits can apply. If the person is a juvenile, the adult alternative-custody path is not the right model; use probation, juvenile court, family, or attorney channels instead.
